THE SMOKIN MOJO KINGS
The Smokin Mojo Kings are based out of Southeast Iowa and West Central Illinois. The line-up consists of Dennis Albee guitar, vocals John Wentzien bass, vocals Jim French harmonica, vocals and Eric Bartholomew drums.
The Smokin Mojo Kings’ up-tempo blues are tempered with a New Orleans funk, which is not surprising as both John and Dennis plied their musical craft down South for several years. Notably John, has played with such luminaries as; J.D. Hill, and Pat Ramsey. Dennis has been a full time musician since his early teens, when he won a battle of the bands and a recording contract in a contest sponsored by Chicago’s premier radio station, WLS. Eric is a veteran of U.S.O. tours that have entertained our troops around the world as well as backing many top professionals on a cruise line. Jim has been playing harmonica and performing with area bands for thirty years.
The Smokin Mojo Kings have been busy writing and recording their second c.d., which like their first c.d. features all original compositions. Their music has been featured on; The Texas Blues Café, WLSO F.M., Blues train F.M., Flying Coyote Radio, The Blues Room (nz radio), Kansas City Online Radio, Fat Cat Radio, as well as Blues Into The Night and Mark Kerr’s Blues Nation Radio.
The Smokin Mojo Kings performances are hallmarked with an energetic "let it all hang out" approach that always guarantees a good time.

Glad to have you all here at the ZOO! My hat is off to Eric for entertaining our troops around the world through the U.S.O. tours!
I'm retired Air Force, so I know what it means to have great entertainers such as yourselves to visit the troops, especially overseas.
I salute you!

What we have here is a very young band, even their press-infosheet that comes with the cd in a plain white paper cover is veryshort. "Thanks for your interest. We have been together for one year and are already working on our second cd. All of the songs are original compositions. Thanks again." Believe it or not, but thats the way we like it. Let the music speak for itself.! No long mysterious info that tells you nothing, no pages full of coming and going musicians (not a good sign anyway) or pages full of names with the headliners of festivals on which they were the opening act at ten in the morning, while the public was limited to the stage crew and the soundman. No, nothing of this, no nonsense, listen to our music please and tell us what you think.
Well, guys (Full line-up mentioned in original) for a debut it's not bad at all ! The sound these four men from Fort Madison,Iowa bring us is funky and special. This is not your average 12-bar bluesband playing only the usual well know traditionals. No, as they already mentioned themselves, all own material and with an original "Smokin Mojo" signature. When I heard the first song:"Shut Yo Yap",and not having looked at the infosheet yet, I presumed that at least the 2 vocalists were black, because it sounded so funky and real. In this song they are argueing a bit and their "rap" sounded so authentic and black. But no, when I looked at the press sheet, I saw four caucasians, well, thats not the way they sounded. Most of the songs have a real funky bluesfeel, with guitarplayer Dennis and Jim's harp up front. A very thight rhythm section (John Wentzien /bass & Eric Bartholomew/drums) puts down a strong funky beat for them over which they can play their solos. Especially in "Blues Gutter" the result is teriffic, in my opinion this is the highlight of this cd. One minor remark I have to make, this cd is a little bit short, only 30 minutes for 8 songs, I would be a lot happier if it had taken double the time. Sometimes I'm happy when a cd is only 30 or 40 minutes, and the end comes as a relief, but not this time. So, luckily this 30 minutes are well spent and The Smokin Mojo Kings have given us a nice, but small bussiness-card with this debut. And we don't worry, if we can believe the info (and we do) the second will arrive soon. Can't wait!
